HEDNESFORD Town have hit the top of the Northern Premier League – after making a 100 per cent start to the season.
The Pitmen made it three wins out of three by beating Workington 2-0 at Keys Park in front of 1,700 fans.
Simeon Maye and Jonny Edwards netted in the second half as newly-promoted Hednesford laid down an early marker.
The Pitmen will now go to Prescot Cables on Tuesday looking for a fourth successive win.
Before the game, manager Gavin Hurren told the Pitching In NPL Podcast that he is trying to screen out the pressure of winning back to back promotions.
He said: “I don’t listen to outside noise, but it’s nice to hear it.
“There are a lot of outstanding teams in this league who have recruited well, and when you break it down, it’s going to be a tough, tough season.
“The outside expectations are a credit to the football club off the field, and on it in the sense of putting a new pitch in that, for me, is one of the best around.
“I’m looking forward to the challenge, and I know all the boys are. The lads have had targets on their backs for their whole careers at the clubs they’ve played for, and now it’s all about being able to produce on the pitch.
“Only time will tell, but given how we’ve started the season, it’s hopefully going to be a positive one.”
After the game, Hurren said part of the battle is trying to break down the teams who come to Keys Park.
He told Hednesford’s official YouTube channel: “That’s what I believe is going to happen most games here. It was another game against five at the back, which is absolutely fine.
“We had to tweak our plans. But we’re going to work on things in training to break down teams that do this. But again, credit to all the boys. We were patient, composed, moved the ball in the right areas, and eventually he got the goals that we deserved.
“But it was another big crowd, and we just know it’s growing. It’s massive for the community. We have, for me, the best fans around.”
