Avery Fields played host to the Midlands Hurricanes rugby league club for community day on Saturday.
The Hurricanes, who play their home matches at the Alexander Stadium, are currently second in Betfred League One – the third tier of professional rugby league in England and Wales, but had an unexpected blank weekend caused by the demise of their scheduled opponents Cornwall.
Instead the Hurricanes and Cornwall joined forces for the ‘Be A Cane’ event at Avery Fields which will give fans an opportunity to meet and interact with both management and players from both the two clubs.
The day included an opening training session, a Q&A session and free Hurricanes merchandise for all attending.
“We were delighted to welcome Hurricanes players, management and supporters along with those who will make the long journey up from Cornwall to Avery Fields,” said Bournville Managing Director Phil Maynard.
“In my previous role at Coventry we worked closely to establish professional rugby league in the city with the Coventry Bears side, the forerunner of the Hurricanes.
“When we became aware that the Hurricanes were playing in Birmingham and looking for ways to engage more with the local rugby community we asked whether we might be able to help.
“We had a meeting with Eorl Crabtree, the CEO of the Hurricanes and a Huddersfield Giants legend in his playing days, at Avery Fields to discuss ways in which they clubs might be able to help each other.
“Eorl suggested the community day to replace their scheduled match against Cornwall and we were only too happy to help.”
