HEDNESFORD Town boss Gavin Hurren wants even bigger crowds at Keys Park this season after starting their Northern Premier League campaign with two wins out of two.
The Pitmen followed up Saturday’s victory at Hebburn with a 2-1 win against Warrington Town on Tuesday night.
It was the ideal way to mark the new Keys Park pitch as second half goals from Niall Watson and an Eliott Johnson penalty sealed the points.
But it was a reminder of how far the club have come over the past year that a crowd of 2,003 turned up for the game – with another big attendance expected for Saturday’s game with Workington.
Hurren told Hednesford’s official YouTube channel: “It’s just a big thank you to all the fans. I mean, over 2,000 on a Tuesday. I questioned if there was going to be a bigger attendance last night in our league.
“We’re followed all the time, aren’t we. But Hebburn away on Saturday to then come here on a midweek and get over 2,000 It was just outstanding, and long may it continue. I believe we’re going to get more on Saturday, because that’s what we do.
“We all rally round, and we want to keep on improving, and let’s keep increasing these gates and making all the fans go home happy, and that’s all we can try and do.”
Hurren was impressed with the new pitch at Keys Park.
He added: “It’s pretty special, to be honest with you. A lot of work went on before the matches even obviously took place, I think it’s an unbelievable pitch.
“We’re really fortunate to play on something like this, that the club have invested in, and I don’t think we were disappointed.”
The Pitmen manager admitted some of the decisions on the night did not go his team’s way – but he has been satisfied with the start to the season.
He added: “We had them watched. They came down last year and they’re a big non league team, and we knew it was going to be a big tough ask. But we went through a game plan, which I thought the lads absolutely delivered. And it was going to be a battle. You’ve got to earn the right, and we did that.”
