MATT Taylor struck a positive note as the relegation alarm bells sounded faintly after the Moors’ narrow defeat at Forest Green.
The club’s head coach saluted the performance as ‘the best since I’ve been here’ but it wasn’t sufficient to garner any points in Gloucestershire.
Adam May’s glorious 30-yarder was sufficient for the hosts to take all the spoils on a day when their league position began to take on a worrying look.
Six points separate Moors from the drop zone with six games to go.
They enjoy a better goal difference too, than Wealdstone – Taylor’s last club – but their current run suggests it could be nervy end to the campaign unless there is an uptick.
Seven points from 15 matches – almost one third of the season – is relegation form by a stretch.
Four of their six remaining matches are against teams chasing the play-offs – the next two are away at Southend and Tamworth – and there is work to be done to ensure they are in the National League next season.
However, Taylor was happy enough with what he saw on the pitch at the New Lawn Stadium.
He said: “The performance was excellent. We dominated the ball, had more chances and defended well.
“It was just that one moment of quality which settled it.
“In the last two games there has been two of the best goals ever scored against us.
“We have come here, they’ve got the biggest budget in the league – and that’s what it gets you.
“We have hit the post, their keeper has been the busier of the two.
“So, I’m disappointed with the result but not the performance.
“The players were applauded off the field and if they perform like that…that’s the best we’ve played since I’ve been here.”
