THE official trailer for the Prime Video documentary fly on the wall series Built In Birmingham: Brady & The Blues has been made available.
Conceived by Blues shareholder and NFL Legend Tom Brady and executive produced by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, it will be launched on August 1 with all five episodes available immediately.
In the first footage revealed today (Thursday), Blues fans set the scene for the club’s urgent need for transformation, explaining that: “Birmingham City have been the pioneers in f*****g up games of football from 1875.”
The maker of the the five-part docuseries says it tells the tale of a club accustomed to sporting heartbreak, who are being rebuilt to win.
This includes American football legend, Tom Brady laying out their new mission statement: “We’re trying to make Birmingham City a world-class team.”
The series sets out to follow that journey, as a new ownership group suffers relegation and multiple managerial changes on the way to a record-breaking season which delivered automatic promotion back to the Championship.
Embedded camera crews have followed the First-Team players, coaching staff and key ownership figures, including Birmingham City’s Head Coach, Chris Davies, Chairman Tom Wagner, Co-Founder and Co-Managing Member of Knighthead Capital Management, LLC (“Knighthead”), and minority owner Brady, as the club fights to ‘instil a winning culture’.
The trailer references Blues’ relegation from the Championship and does not shy away from Wayne Rooney’s doomed spell in charge at St Andrew’s.
It includes shots of Brady showing his commitment to the project led by Wagner.
But it also includes a split-second shot of the controversial incident in 2019 when a fan invaded the pitch and hit Jack Grealish, then of Aston Villa, in the Second City Derby.
Beyond the day-to-day football operations, Built in Birmingham’s makers say it will also explore the unique cultural heritage of Birmingham City and a supporter base who have remained loyal despite a sustained period without success or silverware.
The club’s last major honour was winning the League Cup in 2011.
The documentary aims to shine a spotlight on this community’s resurgence, illustrating how the football club plans to transform a city.
Built in Birmingham is being executive produced by Knight, the mastermind behind Peaky Blinders and a lifelong Blues fan.
Knight will bring his deep connection to the club and storytelling expertise to the project, ensuring a genuine portrayal of Birmingham City’s transformation.
Matt Alvarez (Straight Outta Compton, Are We There Yet?, Straight Outta LA, the
Friday franchise) of Knighthead and board member of the club will serve as an executive producer.
The documentary will be produced by Religion of Sports (Rodgers: Enigma, In the Arena: Serena
Williams, Kobe Bryant’s Muse) and Whisper (Sven, Ben Stokes: Phoenix from the Ashes).
The project was conceived by Brady and Religion of Sports co-founder, Gotham Chopra, following Brady joining as minority owner of Birmingham City in 2023.
Built In Birmingham: Brady The Blues is the latest addition to the Prime membership.
