Southport grabbed the points following a brace from Luke Campbell as a familiar tale played out.
Rushall could count themselves unlucky to be trailing at the break as a moment of slack defending enabled Campbell to grab his first, five minutes before the interval.
This came just moments after Liam McAlinden had sent a header crashing into the woodwork.
The Pics had been on top until the deadlock was broken but found life difficult in front of their opponent’s goal and Campbell added a second with ten minutes to go.
Games are now running out for Richard Sneekes’s side. They have seven games remaining and are six points from safety with a markedly inferior goal difference to all but bottom-placed Farsley Celtic.
They make the long trip to Darlington next week with the Quakers still boasting an outside shot at the play-offs.
