ASTON Villa boss Unai Emery has urged Jadon Sancho to gatecrash Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad this season.

The Manchester United wide man joined Villa on a season-long loan on deadline day – and he could make his debut today at Everton.

But after a disruptive spell at Old Trafford – which saw him loaned out to Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea – Emery wants to give Sancho, 25, the stability he needs.

Sancho was famously frozen out by former United boss Erik ten Hag two years ago.
The Dutchman said Sancho had been left out of the squad against Arsenal due to ‘poor training performances’ – a claim he disputed on social media.
But Sancho played for Dortmund in the 2024 Champions League final that season.

Emery believes an England recall can follow if the player impresses at Villa Park.

Sancho’s last appearance for the Three Lions was in the 2021 European Championship Final at Wembley when he was one of the players to miss a penalty in the shoot-out.

Asked if Sancho should aim for next summer’s World Cup, Emery said: “Of course, this is my objective, to get him back to his best.

“And if he does that, then he’ll come back to the national team.

“Every player wants to be part of the national team.”

Emery added: “He’s a good player, and I felt he was performing very well last year at Chelsea.

“Yes, he had some problems at Manchester United, but when he was at Dortmund, he performed fantastically.

“He’s also played 23 matches with England, he’s still young and hungry. He has the capacity to show his skills and qualities.

“Hopefully we can see his best here.

“The last years he’s played on the left, but at Dortmund he was right-sided. Here, I imagine him in both. He provides something different for us.

“I’m focusing on the player we have and how we can identify the capacity as to how we can get the best performance out of him. This my task now. I’m very involved in how we can do that.”

But Emery confirmed that keeper Emi Martinez will be available after a deadline day drama – which saw a possible move to United fail to materialise.

The Argentina keeper was left out of Villa’s previous game against Crystal Palace when Emery’s side lost 3-0 with Marco Bizot in goal.
Martinez looked certain to leave Villa but Emery said: “Emi staying here is good news, I’m so happy.

“He’s the best goalkeeper in the world and his commitment to Villa is massive.

“He’s always training to his best, respecting Villa.

“Some circumstances happen, but everyone’s happy, the energy’s been very good.
“Emi knows his challenge is with Villa and his national team.
“Our relationship is like I had before, even at Arsenal, we’re speaking a lot.  Everything’s normal now.”
