AMADOU Onana reckons Aston Villa’s record breakers are a ‘special team’ – but says they still have one more job to do.
Unai Emery’s side made it 18 Premier League games unbeaten at Villa Park.
And it was their 32nd win of the season from 56 games in all competitions.
Both feats are club records – but Onana says the real achievement will come next week if they can secure a Champions League spot for the second year running.
Onana says he wants a place in Europe’s elite to become ‘a habit’ for Villa.
But he knows fate will not be in their hands. Friday’s 2-0 win against Tottenham kept Villa on course for a top five finish.
But they will probably have to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford next weekend – and hope their rivals drop points.
Onana said: “The job’s not done yet. We knew we were going to need to win at Villa Park. We’ve been really strong at home.
“That’s done, but we’ve got one more to go, and now we’re definitely focused on that.
“I didn’t know anything about our club records, but we’ve got to keep it going. I’m hungry for more and more. And we’re capable of more. This is a special team, with a lot of great players.
“Even the players on the bench, they could all be in the starting 11, and we keep each other on our toes – you have to be on your best game to start week in and week oout. We’ve got healthy competition and this is the result of that.
“Champions League is not in our hands, but all we can do is win.
“It’s not a secret for anyone, we want to play in the Champions League again – two years in a row.
“We’re in Europe already, but Champions League is something special. We want to reach that target – and make it a habit.”
But Onana says that Villa’s progress has not come easy.
He added: “There’s lot of work and details, because the manager is obsessed with details – that’s what makes him so special and so good.
“He’s one of the best in the industry, and he’s made me a better player as well. He’s tried to to show me aspects of my game that even I didn’t know about.
“The manager’s helping me to grow, as a man and as a player – I’m grateful for the opportunity every day.”
