ANOTHER late goal provided Chasetown with an important three points away from home
against Wythenshawe Town.
The Scholars took to the M6 with their eyes set on earning the club’s first Northern Premier League West away win under, new head-coach, Jamie Hawkins’ tenure.
Saturday’s lineup saw youngster Zach Findlay start for a third match on the bounce, and
included both goalscorers from the Chase’s previous home win against Stalybridge Celtics.
Within a couple minutes of the opening whistle being blown, the hosts had struck the net.
“The first goal was totally against the run of play and I was really pleased with our reaction,” said Hawkins.
Chasetown enjoyed moving the ball down their opponents’ right wing. Two superb crosses
towards the far post found Sam Wilding and George Cater – and they put the Scholars ahead at half-time.
Hawkins believed his team were in a position that their performance up to then had thoroughly warranted.
He said: “I thought we contained and controlled them in the first half, despite going behind.
“Credit to Wythenshawe, they made two changes at the break which gave us a different
proposition to deal with.”
As the grey winter sky turned black, substitute Kevin Spinelli beat Curtis Pond to level the
scores.
It didn’t take long for the relentless Chase to respond. The ball found Jack Langston in midfield who looked up to see Wythenshawe keeper, Greg Hall well off his line. Scholars skipper gracefully chipped Hall, and the ball dropped into the back of the net.
Langston does as he did the week prior, scoring the decisive goal to gain three points for
Chasetown.
Hawkins called it a “moment of real quality.”
He added: “Wythenshawe were much better in the second half and put us
under a bit of pressure at times, but I still felt that we controlled large parts of the game.”
As the final whistle blew, the Stags knew they would be returning home victorious – and they lie just a point outside the play-off spots.
Hawkins said: “It’s nice to come away with all three points – we’ve performed well away from home against Avro, Congleton, and Clitheroe, so a win had been coming.”
