Tamworth’s tie with Manchester United abandoned after serious injury to midfielder Kone

TAMWORTH’S National League Cup game with Manchester United’s Under-21s was abandoned at half-time last night (Wednesday) after a serious injury to Sekou Kone.

The United midfielder – aged 19 and a Mali youth international – needed around 15 minutes of treatment on the pitch following a clash of heads.

Kone was then taken to hospital and a United statement said that the player was ‘stable and communicating’.

The incident happened a minute before the break, and the game did not resume.

BBC journalist Simon Stone posted on social media and said:  “Sekou Kone was being treated for about 15 minutes before he was eventually carried off, straight out of the stadium and, I assume, to hospital.”

A statement from United was issued this evening and read: “Sekou Kone is conscious, stable and communicating with United’s medical team. He has been taken to hospital as a precaution for further checks.”

Tamworth’s X account described what happened and said: “Major stoppage in play after a clash of heads leaves Kone on the ground for Man United.

“The referee has blown for half-time, with the Man United youngster still on the ground receiving treatment.

We can confirm that Sekou Kone has been stretchered off after a clash of heads earlier in the game.

“Everyone at Tamworth Football Club wishes the young man a speedy recovery.

“Due to the medical situation, we are forced to abandon tonight’s fixture, details will be revealed in due course.

“Sending our best wishes to Manchester United PL2 player Sekou Kone, who has been taken to hospital.”

The game is expected to be rescheduled, with details still to be announced.
