TAMWORTH boss Andy Peaks paid tribute to Tom Tonks for reaching 100 appearances for the Lambs.
But he could not mark the milestone with a victory as Peaks’ side lost 2-1 at Gateshead.
Tamworth will have a chance to put that right on Monday when they host newly-promoted Brackley Town.
But Saturday’s result left them with just one National League win so far.
Will Flint scored twice to fire Gateshead to victory. The 19-year-old midfielder, who joined on loan from Doncaster Rovers this summer, grabbed his first senior goals.
He opened the scoring after 26 minutes and put Gateshead in control midway through the second half.
Tamworth pulled one back through Harvey Sawyer in stoppage time but slipped to their third defeat in four matches this season.
But Peaks spoke about Tonks’ ton-up landmark and told the club’s X account: “As a manager, it’s great having a player like Tom in your side. In the changing room, he’s a leader who sets standards and drives the lads on. On the pitch, he battles for every ball, giving everything from the first whistle to the last.
“Every time he puts that Tamworth badge on his chest, he gives nothing less than 100 per cent for this club and our supporters. That commitment and pride can’t be taught – it’s who Tom is.
“One hundred appearances is a huge milestone and a testament to the impact he’s had here at Tamworth FC. And he’s been a massive part of this journey.
“And of course, we can’t forget that lethal long throw-in – it’s given us some unforgettable moments, lifted the fans off their feet, and caused no end of problems for the opposition.”
