CANNOCK’S unbeaten Zach Evans has switched camps and signed with Birmingham’s Max McCracken.
The move – certainly its timing – has surprised me. The 28-year-old was with Jon Pegg and promoted by Cannock’s Scott Murray who gave him fights in his hometown – and, only weeks ago, Zach had been offered a Midlands welterweight title chance in front of his fans.
He withdrew from that Chase Leisure Centre date for personal reasons.
In a statement, he said: “Unfortunately, I’ve had to pull out due to some personal reasons outside of boxing, meaning I’ve not been in the gym much.
“I was trying to make it work, but sometimes things need to come before boxing – this was one of them.”
Zach is now making a fresh start with McCracken.
Max said: “I think he’ll do well. He’s 10-0 and has a really good relationship with trainer Mitch Pearce, they work well together.”
Evans initially made a name for himself in kick-boxing before embarking on a 24 bout amateur career.
He first boxed during a spell based in York, representing the Legions club.
Zach picked up a Yorkshire Elite Challenge title in his very first amateur fight, through a unanimous points success over Joe Garside, now a solid pro.
He began his own professional career under the Black Country Boxing banner.
Pearce has turned him into an adept box-fighter – and fine body puncher.
