MATTY Williams, the young Birmingham super-heavyweight being tipped for very big things, is poised to make his debut for Team GB.
The former council grass cutter will be looking to mow down the opposition at the prestigious Tammer tournament in Finland.
The competition, which runs from October 29 to November 3, attracts some of the biggest names in amateur boxing and the roll-call of former gold medal winners includes Mike Tyson and Oscar De La Hoya.
Max McCracken, pro coach at Matty’s club, Acocks Green ABC, said the 20-year-old has settled nicely into the GB set-up after joining the squad in July.
“He’s had some what they call gym bouts and done well,” he said. “They’re very pleased with him.”
Williams, 6ft 4ins and 17st, has mopped-up on the home front, bagging every major domestic honour going. The goal is a place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, then a lucrative professional career.
“He’s a special talent,” Max told me. “His work rate and punch volume are phenomenal. And he’s still growing, still filling out.”
In a previous interview, Williams, a Birmingham City die-hard, told me: “My dreams are to fight at the Blues ground and become a world champion.
“My strengths are my engine and the volume of punches I throw. I like to put the pressure on.”
