CAPTAIN Tobiasz Musielak says Birmingham’s belief has been given an early big boost after almost grabbing a win at Leicester on Thursday night.
The Curtis Sport Brummies got their noses in front at the Hydroscand Arena with seven races gone when Michael Jepsen Jensen and Keynan Rew grabbed the team’s first 5-1 of the new season.
And they stayed ahead right until Heat 13 when the previously unbeaten Matej Zagar was disqualified after suffering mechanical issues in the build-up to the race.
Leicester took a maximum from that one, and that would prove to be the defining race result in the end.
Brummies showed their real potential for the 2025 season with a great effort to go down by just two points – 44-46.
Overall qualification was always going to be beyond them after their disastrous opening night defeat at Perry Barr, but a narrow reverse in the East Midlands and the overall level of performance offered far more encouragement.
They may be out of the Knockout Cup, but after losing by 24 points on home shale on Monday, to go and almost get the win at last year’s league runners-up has given everyone early renewed hope around Perry Barr.
Musielak said: “We’re all new at Birmingham so it was difficult to catch the right set-up, actually we didn’t catch anything at first.
“Tonight was much better and we were leading the way for almost the whole meeting.
“We were disappointed to lose the lead after Heat 13 – but this is speedway.
“We’ve shown that we can really fight with the other guys though and that’s how it should be.”
The Brummies head to Musielak’s former track Sheffield next Thursday (April 3, 7.30pm) for their league opener – with Ipswich the first visitors to Perry Barr in the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership on Monday, April 7 (7.30pm).
