BOURNVILLE Head Coach Alex Grove hailed the brilliance of Nathan Decalmer after the wing scored four tries in the 41-19 Regional One Midlands victory over Newent.
Decalmer followed his hat-trick in last week’s narrow defeat at Bromsgrove with another breathtaking display of finishing which gave Newent’s defenders a torrid time on their first visit to Avery Fields.
“We know how lethal Nathan is and we were deliberately just trying to give him the ball a bit earlier today. We didn’t want him to be sat out there on the wing not doing a great deal,” Grove said.
“What was most impressive was that he got the ball on a couple of occasions when it wasn’t really on to go and score but he found space where there didn’t seem to be any. Spare a thought for his opposite man, he’ll probably be having nightmares tonight.
“All four of those tries were scored from inside his own half but it’s remarkable what he can do with the smallest amount of space. He is lightning quick but he also offers a massive threat in the air on re-starts.
“He gets up high, he hangs in the air, he can tap the ball back, he can catch it two-handed above his head quite comfortably so then your own re-start becomes a real attaching weapon.
“He’s brilliant and he’s a huge asset to us.”
Bournville’s win maintained their unbeaten home record this season and came against a Newent side who had lost only once before they arrived in Birmingham.
“Leading into today Newent had lost only one game. They won against Nuneaton by a significant margin but the other three games they had won by a cumulative margin of ten points and they had got a bonus point in each of them,” Grove said.
“What that shows is that they can stay in the fight and nick games so we were very mindful of that particularly when we had a few yellow cards in the second half and we were down to 13 men for what felt like an awful long time. We knew that they were not dead and buried.
“Getting a penalty and Jacob Fewtrell kicking it to take it to a 15 points cushion ended the contest by which time we had a full complement so to then go and score another try was the cherry on top.”
