WARWICKSHIRE all-rounder Jacob Bethell is set to become the youngest-ever England Men’s captain in an international match when he leads the team in Dublin.
With regular white-ball captain Harry Brook and England’s other all-format players rested, the leadership for three T20s in Dublin has been handed to all-rounder Bethell, 21, who has had limited playing time this summer.
England have named the squads for the upcoming white-ball series against South Africa and the IT20 internationals away to Ireland.
The three-match IT20 series against Ireland will be staged at Malahide in Dublin with the opening game on Wednesday, September 17.
Monty Bowden was 23 years and 144 days old when he led England in a Test against South Africa in 1889.
And, to date he remains the youngest man to have captained England in an international.
Bethell told BBC Sport: ”It was obviously great news to hear.
”The feeling was that of pride at first. But it’s not really sunk in yet. It’s only been a few hours.
“I’m looking forward to it and it’ll be a huge honour to lead the team against Ireland.”
National selector, Luke Wright said: “Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads.
“The series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage.”
