AS soon he moved up to bantamweight, Callum Singh has bagged a title opportunity.
But the skilful 23-year-old will have to travel a long way from his Coventry home and step into his opponent’s backyard for the chance.
Callum, a product of respected Bulkington gym, will face Lennon “Mayhem” Mulligan at the Double Tree Hilton Hotel, Glasgow, on June 21.
At stake is the Commonwealth youth title, which is a new one on me. Of more significance is the fact a victory should secure Singh a very lofty place in the domestic rankings – and open the door to major fights.
Unbeaten in seven, it is his first fight since a bid to take the Midlands super-flyweight title was scuppered by the scales last October. Callum came in a mere pound over the limit, but still boxed champ Sean Bruce without the belt being on the line.
He produced a career best performance to floor and outpoint Bruce.
Mulligan, in his home city, is no easy ask. The Scot was a very good amateur, represented his country and has notched-up six straight wins as a pro, two by stoppage.
“Mulligan’s annoyed Callum a bit by posting on social media that he’s going to get banged out,” said Bulkington boss Brendan Norman. “If you look at his record, he’s had it all his own way. This fight will show what Callum’s made of and what he’s made of.
“If Callum beats the lad, he’ll go up to something like number three in the rankings and that will put him in line for something.”
Brendan believes his boxer has the tools to make a significant mark on the game.
He added: “When Callum first turned pro, I wasn’t sure what he’d achieve. In the amateurs, he always competed with the top lads, but didn’t beat them. Now there is money on the table he is doing everything properly. I don’t think a British title is out of the question.
“We know Callum’s up against it, we know what it’s like fighting away from home. He has to put a serious dent in the lad to beat him. But he’s really up for it and we are going up there full of confidence.”
