FOR Ryan Kelly, the opponent may have changed for Matchroom’s major show next weekend, but the stakes – and risks – remain just as high.
And, in my opinion, the Chelmsley Wood contender faces a much tougher proposition in the shape of Caoimhin Agyarko.
It was announced on Wednesday that Agyarko will replace injured Ishmael Davis on the Saturday, April 19, bill at Canon Medical Arena, Sheffield.
The Belfast light-middle is sharp and fast and presents fresh problems to be solved. Kelly’s respected trainer John Costello will no doubt be drawing up a new game plan with limited time to do it.
Agyarko is unbeaten in 16, with seven wins coming early, and holds the WBA international belt. And he’s in shape, despite the late call up, having fought only 11 days ago. The man known as “Black Thunder” is on a roll.
There are significant plus points for Kelly. In Sheffield, Yorkshireman Davis would’ve been the home fighter with solid support. The Canon Medical Arena is now a neutral venue for Ryan and Agyarko.
There is, however, no doubt 31-year-old Kelly has faced much better opposition in a 25 bout career.
In November, he came within a whisker of beating Kieron Conway for the Commonwealth middleweight title – and many good judges felt he did enough. Pretty much everyone – apart from those that mattered – felt he should’ve been given the decision over future British champ Brad Pauls.
The former Midlands champ has also faced world class banger Hamzah Sheeraz. “Ruthless Ryan” has matured into a very, very good fighter.
For Kelly, the goal remains the same. In an interview with Black Country Boxing Promotions, he said: “Money follows belts, but it’s not my primary motivation. I wouldn’t box for free, but there are easier ways to make a living. I feel like I’ve underachieved in some ways – I should have more belts.
“However, I believe I can still win those bigger titles, especially with the support of major promoters and a great team.”
To date, Agyarko’s best win has come, via split decision, against former British champ Troy Williamson.
On social media, Kelly stated simply: “New opponent, same job at hand.”
But it is a job that may require different tools. Kelly and Davis was a potential cracker – expect the same fizz from Kelly and Agyarko.
