ANOTHER day, another gold medal for outstanding super-heavy Matty Williams.
Having mown down the opposition on these shores, the former council grass cutter is making his mark for Team GB on the world stage.
Without jinxing things, it worth putting a flutter on the Birmingham City diehard collecting a medal at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
Blessed with a truly amazing engine, Williams looks something special.
He underlined that on Saturday by winning the Feliks Stamm tournament, staged in Kielce, Poland.
In the semis, Matty, a product of Acocks Green ABC, unanimously outpointed Ireland’s talented Gus Idemudia.
Acocks Green pro trainer Max McCracken said: “The first round was close, then Matty took over with his high volume punching. Gus did well not to get stopped – his experience got him to final bell.”
The final underlined how good Williams is. He beat 6ft 10ins Pole Oskar Safaryan who has competed at the world and European championships. What’s more, he came close to stopping the giant.
Max said: “Even with the height advantage, Matty still managed to outjab Safaryan, get inside and dominate. Safaryan was given a standing count in the third, was holding on and happy to make it to final bell.”
That’s four golds from five tournaments for Williams, his only loss coming via split decision to current world number one Aibek Oralbay, from Kazakhstan.
Max added: “The Commonwealth Games are in July so we are hoping Matty gets selected to go. I believe he wins the gold, 100 per cent.
“He’s been a regular at the Blues home games this season, thanks to John Clarke down at the Blues. This kid is the future of Birmingham boxing – a really special talent who will bring massive nights to Birmingham, as I’ve told you many times before.”
