ALVECHURCH boss Tim Flowers challenged himself and his players to give support to goalscorer Dan Sweeney.
The ‘Church chief was satisfied with a point following defeats to Kettering and Stamford as Sweeney’s second-half strike ensured a share of the spoils at Lye Meadow following a 1-1 draw with Leiston.
And he said the performance improved after they found a way to help the striker.
He said: “I thought we were poor in the first half. We talk continuously about getting out of the traps quickly. We were second to a lot.
“That led to us being put under pressure. I thought Leiston were good in the first half to be honest. We didn’t get to grips with it.
“Second-half, we were a hellava lot better.
“Credit to the boys. They are working hard. Sweeney’s goal is brilliant. A fantastic take. If he’s spotted where the goalie is and hit it there, I don’t know.
“It’s dipped over his head. I thought he was a threat. We didn’t get enough support to him. When you consider what wins footballl matches: crosses hurt, sustained attacks hurt opponents. We don’t do either enough.”
‘Church have banished any suggestion they may finish in trouble and currently stand slap-bang in the middle of the Southern Premier Central Division table.
Flowers has already cautioned against coasting into the final games of the season.
He said: “I’ve said to the boys: ’Do you realise how close you are to being a threat in this division?’
“Our objective is to finish as high as possible. To keep progressing. To get as many points as we possibly can.
“If people from the outside are looking at Alvechurch, then a good finish to the season can only be good.”
