THIS week, Martyn takes a look ahead to the Rockets’ huge clash with Reading on Saturday night – a game which could go a long way to deciding the fate of both teams’ seasons. But he also reflects on a Friday night to remember last weekend when Rockets beat Derby – and saw a fantastic atmosphere after trying out a new day for home matches. OUR first Friday night game of the season last week was such a success that the club’s management might want to consider doing it more often.
We moved our match with Derby forwards to see if Friday worked better than Saturday for our home matches.
And the result was a packed house – with another Rockets win included!
We did a lot of work with a few of the schools and they really enjoyed – it was a great atmosphere and a quality game, especially from us.

But we definitely got something positive from it. It was a good night and it probably one of our best, atmosphere-wise, this season.
There are lots of different variables that go into it and enable us to go out and spread the word. We’re playing well and fighting for that No1 position and that helps a lot.
The match itself was a great response from us all after the defeat at Milton Keynes. We hate losing, but we took on board the lessons from that game.
We stuck to our game plan we did what we do best, which is defend and get out in transition.
And that has set us up for a huge Saturday game – again in front of our home fans – against Reading Rockets. Reading are in second place, with us close behind in fourth.

So, we need to go get another victory and close the gap between us and the teams above us. It still applies that, if we win all of our games, we win the league.
But we know it’s not going to be the same type of game.
Hopefully, people have got the buzz after last week and really enjoyed it – the aims is that they become returning faces.
But, in a way, we’re helping to fly the flag for Birmingham right now.

We’re in the highest league. We’re playing the best basketball in terms of performance. I think we’re the most successful team at the moment.
I think all the teams in and around the city, respect what we’re doing.
But while we’re challenging at the moment, we know that discipline creates consistency, and all these things that go into what we want to do as a club.
That goes down to every single individual. Everyone needs to be on their job and doing what they need to in order for there to be progression in the right fashion and in the right manner.

I think we’ve been doing that if I’m honest with you, it’s a good feeling to be part of something that has seen growth and seen progression.
We’re fighting for top position this season, whereas we didn’t even make the play-offs last year. Now we want a top four finish.
This is a big month for us, with the trophy final coming up at the end of March, so it’s all looking great for the club.
